Sir Elton John has called for a ban on organized religion, saying it promotes homophobia and turns some people into “hateful lemmings,” The Associated Press reported.

In an interview published in the Music Monthly Magazine of the British newspaper The Observer, he said, “I would ban religion completely, even though there are some wonderful things about it.” He also said: “Religion has always always tried to turn hatred toward gay people. It turns people into hateful lemmings, and it is not really compassionate.” And he added “The reality is that organized religion doesn’t seem to work.”

He also criticized religious leaders for failing to address the world’s conflicts. “Why aren’t they having a conclave?” he asked. “Why aren’t they coming together?” He said musicians had also been lax. “It’s like the peace movement in the ’60s,” he said. “Musicians got through to people by getting out there and doing peace concerts, but we don’t seem to do them any more. If John Lennon were alive today, he’d be leading it with a vengeance.”
