Jenny Agutter and Will Kemp join Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe in the forthcoming production of Peter Shaffer’s Equus, directed by Thea Sharrock, which opens at the Gielgud on 27 February (previews from 16 February).

Equus tells the disturbing story of 17-year-old stablehand Alan Strang (Radcliffe), who one night inexplicably blinds six horses with a hoof pick. Psychiatrist Martin Dysart (Griffiths) tries to understand what drove this usually obedient and harmless young man to such a violent and shocking act.

Agutter plays Hesther Saloman, the role occupied by Eileen Atkins in the 1977 film of Equus, in which Agutter also appeared, winning a Best Supporting Actress BAFTA for her role as Jill Mason. Agutter has frequently worked for the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, though it is for her screen work that she is more readily recognised. From her early career playing Roberta in The Railway Children, Agutter has accumulated a long string of TV and film credits, most recently in The Alan Clark Diaries and Spooks.

Kemp, who plays the horse Nugget, trained with the Royal Ballet School before joining choreographer Matthew Bourne’s company Adventures In Motion Pictures, starring in the productions Swan Lake, Cinderella, The Car Man and Play Without Words. His film work includes Van Helsing and the forthcoming Miguel And William.

The rest of the cast has been confirmed as Joanna Christie, Jonathan Cullen, Colin Haigh, Karen Meagher, Gabrielle Reidy, Greig Cooke, Joel Corpuz, Temujin Gill and Jami Quarrell.
