ian_thorpe1.jpg  Five-times Olympic champion Ian Thorpe has been accused by the French paper L’Equipe that he returned a drug test with “abnormally high” levels of testosterone and Luteinizing Hormone, Timed Finals reports.

Meanwhile the sportsman has denied using performance-enhancing drugs and vowed to clear his name after a doping test before his retirement showed unusually high levels of naturally, occurring hormones. The 24-year-old former Australian swimmer told a news conference on Sunday he had no idea why the random test, taken in May last year, had produced an irregular result.

Thorpe, regarded as one of the greatest swimmers of all time, described how he was stunned to hear the news on Saturday, after it was leaked to a French newspaper.

“I was in complete shock, I did not know what to do, I didn’t know how to react. I was physically shaking. I just didn’’t understand, it was gut-wrenching”. “It’s probably at the other end of the spectrum of winning an Olympic gold. It puts a question mark over that achievement and all my achievements. My accomplishments in this sport in people’s eyes are being diminished.”

Wearing a light blue collared shirt, a red-eyed Thorpe addressed a gathering of around 200 journalists and photographers across the road from Rod Laver Arena, the venue for the world championships this week, Guardian Unlimited informs. He added that he had never used any illegal substances and would co-operate with the investigating authorities to prove his innocence. “There’s never going to be an ideal outcome but it will finish and I will win,” he added.
