A Beatles monument is to be erected in the centre of Hamburg, in Germany close to some of the clubs where the fab-four launched their career.

The German city of Hamburg can justifiably lay claim to launching the international career of the Beatles, and now 45 years later, the city is erecting a monument to the rock legends.

An old rock radio station is behind the idea and says construction of a steel structure will begin this year. The statue will depict the Fab Four: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, as well as Stuart Sutcliffe, an original Beatle who died in Hamburg in 1962.

The monument, which will cost around $725,000, will be built on a corner in the St Pauli district, near clubs where the boys from Liverpool launched their international career in 1962, with songs including Love Me Do.
